Dr. Jawad Shah, MD, FRCS (C), FAANS, FACS

CEO, Insight Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience
Clinical Associate Professor, Michigan State University
Co Director, Center for Cognition and Neuroethics

Dr. Shah studied at McGill University in Montreal and the University of Manitoba prior to completing medical school at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada where he was also raised. He began PhD work in Psychoneuroimmunology prior to embarking on specialty training in Neurosurgery. He completed sub-specialty fellowship training in skull base neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas. His areas of specialty include brain stem surgery, vascular neurosurgery, brain tumors, complex spine and neuromodulation. He currently practices at McLaren, Hurley and Genesys Hospitals.

He is involved in extensive research projects including clinical, patent work, biological/mechanical and electrical product development, industry sponsored studies, theoretical philosophy among other areas. He is a faculty member at the Michigan State University Medical School. He also is Co Director of the Center for Cognition and Neuroethics jointly administered by the University of Michigan and IINN.

Dr. Shah settled down in Flint, MI with his wife, a native of Flint, and children in the fall of 2003. When he is not working; he is constantly thinking of ways to make better the community. He also enjoys snowboarding, fishing, scuba diving, traveling, and reading.


Nadir Ijaz

Business Manager, Insight Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience

Nadir Ijaz is the Business Manager for Insight Institute of Neurosurgery & Neuroscience (IINN).  After acquiring a Bachelor's degree in Genetics & minor in Business from Texas A&M University, he joined the medical industry, and has been working in the field for over 8 years. In his current role, he has managed multiple multimillion-dollar projects; drafting strategic business plans to fulfill both short-term and long-term goals. Nadir's exceptional implementation of measures to ensure business efficiency and cost-effectiveness, along with his ability to stay current with federal and state guidelines, enable him to thrive within the private business domain. Currently, he is managing a startup with a multi-specialty relationship with over 60 providers based in Chicago as a wing of IINN.

Nadir has published in several medical journals like the journal of Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America and is a member of several organizations including NERVES, Neurosurgery Executives' Resource Value and Education Society.

Being very passionate about the rejuvenation of Flint and focused on education, Nadir has been deeply involved with Sylvester Broome Centre since its acquisition.

Nadir is married to Ayesha, with whom he shares an immense love for travel and adventure. Being a nature buff, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and biking, and has biked the 180 mile MS-150 from Houston to Austin for four years!


Mohammad Aslam

Mohammed Aslam is an automotive engineer with 30 years of experience, currently working for Delphi. He ha earned a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Wayne State University and he also holds several patents in fuel pump technology and technical presentations in various areas of the Auto industry.

Mr. Aslam is highly passionate about the educational aspirations of youth and has demonstrated that passion by participating in and leading after hour school educational programs in local Flint schools. Currently, he is the educational tutoring lead for the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village tutoring initiative and is an integral leader in ensuring that the youth have the academic resources needed to be successful. 

He as taught ACT preparatory course for past five years to local community students and is a board member for Genesee Academy School and leader and advocate within the Flint Islamic community. He is a resident of Flint for past 30 years and has been blessed with two daughters and a son.


Timothy Abdul-Matin

Timothy Abdul-Matin is a published author and full time community activist. He has been working as recovery coach and youth mentor for over the past six years using his life experience to focus on life stirring for incarcerated and returning citizens. Currently, doing jail ministry at the Genesee County Jail. He is a student at Mott Community College and a graduate of Flint Strive and Mott Workforce Development with certifications in green construction, weatherization and youth mental first aid. Timothy serves as a board member for Made Institute, Flint Muslim Food Pantry, Flint North Side Masjid and the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village. He is also a recipient of Neighborhood Leader Award by the Black Relationship to Land Committee (2014) for his community leadership and was an advocate for "Ban the Box" here in Genesee county. In 2014, his book titled Go to Get My Soul Right was published, and he is in the process of publishing volume 2 of his writings (2017). Timothy is a lifetime resident of Flint, Michigan.


Maryum Rasool

Maryum Rasool possess over 16 years of experience in fund development/marketing/project management and strategic development. Maryum and her husband share a beautiful daughter and son, were they currently reside in Michigan. She earned her Master of Science in Administration (MSA) degree from Central Michigan University and is an educator who teaches health care marketing at the college level and currently works as a Manager of Industry Relations. Prior to completion of her MSA Maryum spent three years abroad in Damascus, Syria studying Islam and Arabic, she received her Ijaza in Tajweed in 1999. In early 2013 upon learning of an opportunity to share her Syrian experience worldwide, Maryum and other founding Rabata members set out on a journey to create an interstellar to advocate for a female voice in Islamic scholarship. Along the way, Maryum has discovered that this Rabata journey is a trajectory that involves the readiness of others to reach out to one another and she is inspired to do the same, fusing the bonds of sisterhood.


Eric Leverette

Eric Leverette is an inspired and dedicated individual in the field of education. Working with the youth over the past nine years has inspired him to fulfill and dedicate his efforts towards the improvement of youth locally and internationally. Eric is also involved in the STAR Program (Smart Teachers As Role Models), a pre-education program helping males dedicated in the field of education to become successful educators. 

Eric is currently attending the University of Michigan-Flint majoring in Elementary Education, Math and Science. He earned an Associates in General Studies with Honors from Mott Community College in 2013.

Anthony De'Voll Turner
Development Director

Anthony D. Turner has over 28 years of experiences in the areas federal, state and local government, nonprofit management, organizational & board development, program development, for-profit and non-profit entities and community service which has prepared him to deal effectively with the various issues that plague our communities. Mr. Turner retired as a GS 12 Civil Servant with the United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, where he was a Partnership (Public Relations) Specialist. His last assignment before retirement was the 2010 Decennial (2010 Census) where he was responsible for ensuring a "Complete Population Count" for 13 Counties, 4 major media markets and 8 minor media markets in Michigan. He also was a Information Liaison for 3 Governors Offices where he provided technical expertise to governmental staff. He holds multiple governmental certifications from the  U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Response Unit, the U.S. Dept. Of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. He has also received many earned awards from the U.S. Department of Commerce such as: U.S. Bureau of the Census Commendation Award, U. S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census -  Public Service Commendation and the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, Land Bank Board of Advisors Recognition of Service Award.

He brings a no- nonsense, direct approach to solving problems along with  transparency and accountability to the process, and is keenly focused on accomplishing the objectives. He believes that the solution to the issues is not in individual initiatives but in the collective ability of the "Team" to catalyze around the objectives and goals at hand. Mr. Turner has served on Federal, State, County and township level committees and has been involved with economic and educational development in his community. Additionally, Mr. Turner has served his Country ‘Honorably’ in the United States Marine Corps, served as a Law Enforcement Counselor and Chaplain and retired from that profession with the conferred rank of Colonel . He is the husband of 30 years to Dollene R. Turner M.P.A. and is the proud father of 4 children.
