The Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village

A community pillar in Flint, Michigan

The Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV) is composed of long time Flint residents, community members, stakeholders, and newcomers who call Flint home. This group of individuals is committed to being part of an equitable resurgence of Flint, Michigan by investing in its young people. SBEV serves as a pillar of community life for the city of Flint. Although we particularly focus on the northern region of Flint where people, institutions, economies, and infrastructure have been impacted by disinvestment and isolation for several decades, our goal is to provide young people of the entire city a space to learn, develop, lead, and invest in their individual development, as well as the development of their communities.

SBEV has been working with the local community to learn more about the programs that would greatly benefit the youth in the local area; while at the same time, building relationships with funders, institutions, nonprofits, and organizations. Programs will focus on empowering youth through education with tutoring, literacy, a library, community forums, sports and various activities, in addition to revitalization.

SBEV will carry out research in collaboration with the Center for Cognition and Neuroethics, a joint venture between the Philosophy Department at the University of Michigan-Flint and the Insight Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience (IINN). The Ethical Urban Living Project with its journal, the Journal of Ethical Urban Living is “committed to publishing scholarship addressing the dramatic impact social policies and legal institutions have on the way we live our lives.”

Youth Focused

We firmly believe that investing in young people is the key to creating powerful and lasting change in the community. We nurture their leadership skills to become active, informed, and relentless agents for their own success. Programs, services, and opportunities are all designed to incorporate the voice of young people, regardless of gender, race, or religion, work passionately to empower the youth in Flint and their communities; giving them a voice in the world.

Guided by the principles of Islam, our mission is to cultivate leadership capacity. We will serve all people in a dignified manner regardless of gender, race, or religion, and work to empower the youth in Flint and their communities to give them a voice in the world.

By developing and investing in youth, we desire to transform Flint into a just and equitable city.
